I know you see me today with a scaling business. One that’s brought me a lot of joy – and a lot of freedom.
But I wanna get real.
Because what really irks me about the online space is how there’s a total lack of transparency in what really goes on behind the scenes of starting and scaling a business.
I hope that this insight can both make you feel like whatever growing pains you’re experiencing are totally normal, and give you a clear path to get out of any rut you may be experiencing.
I used to tell Dale that growing a business felt like being on a treadmill that was set to a few speeds too fast 😅
And I really freaking meant it.
Once momentum started building in my business (like landing great clients and getting invites for exciting opportunities), I felt like I couldn’t hop off even for a moment or everything I’d been working so hard to hold up might just lose steam or straight up fall down.
Which, if you’ve been there, you’ll remember, is a terrifying feeling.
→ The idea that everything you’ve built can’t stand up unless you’re there to do the heavy lifting.
But what I realized along the way (and with a lot of late nights, tears, and regular stints of burnout) was this:
It’s not the idea of you holding up the whole business which is scary.
What’s really scary is NOT having a plan to get out of that cycle.
And the idea that you’ll have to keep working this hard forever.
It already felt like I was working more than I had in my old 9-5. Which quite frankly, made no sense at all considering the whole promise of online entrepreneurship was freedom.
So the only two logical reasons for this were:
1) Everybody in the online space was lying (this seemed unlikely…)
or
2) There was something I wasn’t doing right
In hindsight?
There was an option 3 that I only realized afterwards.
Option 3: It’s a temporary, but totally normal phase, that you just need a plan to get out of.
Everyone experiences what I like to call, the Treadmill Growing Pains. A season that so many service providers experience when momentum starts rolling yet they don’t have all the pieces in place to help them manage everything that’s now on their plate.
Within just 6 months of setting a plan in place, I had a team there to support me, I’d upleveled the business to a micro-agency so I could work with more freedom (+ scalable revenue), retired my partner from his teaching job, and came to live on a tropical island for the foreseeable future (because that’s what was on my vision board).
(thanks Captain Holt)
You see…
A LOT CAN CHANGE IN 6 MONTHS.
If you’re ready to get off the treadmill and start scaling to 6 and multi-6 figures, here are the 5 things you should prioritize:
And above all, lean into the fact that you don’t have to know everything right now, you just need to find the support of people who can help you take step after step toward the life on your vision board.
Once I started prioritizing each of these pieces, I started taking quarterly vacations and building CHOICE into everything I do.
No matter where your business is currently sitting, I want you to know this is so possible for you, too. Because ultimately, scaling means being able to multiply something without doing more work.
