I’ll wager what’s keeping you from reaching your goals isn’t what you think it is.
It’s not having too small an audience.
It’s not needing to become a better writer.
It’s not even having too few leads coming in.
Because these are all symptoms of a bigger problem.
→ You’re doing too much.
So often, what holds us in the place we are, is this idea that in order to move forward, we have to do more, when in fact, a lot of times you have to do less. You need to…
As service providers and copywriters, we tend to latch onto the newest, shiniest strategies we see around us, add them to our repertoire, and end up crafting a piecemeal approach that leaves us…
…Moving an inch in a million different directions, instead of miles in the direction you need to be going.
I see it over and over and over again with clients inside of FFC, EBA, and other programs. They slide into my DMs and say, “Okay Krystle, this is where I want to go, but I just don’t know how to get there. I feel like I’ve done X, Y or Z and nothing is working.”
And my answer?
The problem is that X, Y and Z were just shiny distractions.
And that even though they didn’t work, you’re still looking for more quick-win tactics to help you out of the hole.
→ In other words, you’re too scattered.
There are three main categories I see people (my past self included) fall into under the scattered category… Scattegory? …anyway. You may be victim to one of them or all of them, but the good news is → your solution doesn’t lie in doing MORE, but in identifying which one(s) you see yourself struggling with and then being ruthless in reducing.
First up (and most common) lies in your day-to-day workflow + workload.
So let’s dig into it:
This looks like sitting down at your desk, unsure of what to work on, and picking away at a little bit of everything.
Your To-Do list looks like:
Then, by the end of the day you can’t quite put your finger on what you’ve accomplished or achieved.
If that feels relatable for you, first of all, I just wanna say, even with running multiple sides of a business, I still feel this from time to time.
BUT, because I know how to identify when I’m getting scattered, I can stop the spiral and go, oh wait a second, what’s going on here? Let me recalibrate and go back to some of the core disciplines that I have built into the infrastructure in my business.
…And in the way I’m using my systems and time to help support the efficiency of my day-to-day.
So if you constantly feel like somehow those 8 hours escaped you, then you need to take a look at the way that you’re spending your days, your weeks and your months, and make sure that you carefully (and in a cutthroat manner) remove any unnecessary pieces.
When you are efficiently and effectively using your time to move the needle forward every single stage of your week, month, and quarter, that’s what compounds into momentum.
When I started my business, I was in the weeds doing different kinds of copywriting tasks because I really just wanted to see what was out there. But very quickly, within a few months, I decided email was my thing. I’d written sales pages and web copy. But when I added some email in I immediately knew it was for me.
So what did I do?
Learned everything I could about email.
I took email projects as often as I could and started calling myself an email copywriter. That was the very first thing that made a huge difference in the trajectory of my business.
Giving myself one clear way to serve people is what propelled me into being booked out, specifically with my direct offer. When I decided email was my baby, the way that I was going to serve people became very clear.
When your audience can see that you do one thing really f*cking well, they trust you for that one thing more than anyone else. Once they trust you for that one thing and you’ve gone narrow → you can go wide and add an element, and then another.
If you are going down too many avenues for lead gen and doing a little over here and a little over there, you’re spreading your time too thin to do any of them well…
…Further perpetuating problem number one, which is → you’re scattered in your day-to-day activities.
Doing a little bit of everything means you’re not able to improve and optimize your skill for lead gen on one or two channels.
Meaning you rush between everything, not being a pro at anything.
Harsh, but true.
Now, I’m not saying you can’t do a lot of things well, but if you’re under the $200,000 mark in your business, it’s too early to do so many different things. To clarify, I don’t mean having different marketing channels like Instagram, Tiktok, and YouTube. You can certainly do that and repurpose.
What I mean is trying to do too many main channels.
My recommendation is, choose one avenue for lead generation, one main offer that you want to be known for, and of course, nail down your efficiency in your day-to-day.
In order to do this effectively, it is vital that you start to look at where your leads are coming from.
Once you’ve identified that, start thinking about how you can serve them best (and communicate that in your messaging)
Start analyzing what’s stopping you from achieving your goals.
Ask yourself, “Am I feeling scattered? In what way? Is it my day-to-day efficiency? Are my offers too broad? Am I serving too broad of an audience? Am I too scattered in my lead generation?”
And it might be all of these, and that’s fine! I’ve had all of these problems at lots of different points in my business. But now’s your opportunity to identify, acknowledge, and then decide how you’re going to move forward.
